No Filipino child should be left behind

There are still issues on the Philippine education system that need to be resolved like the continuous decline in the quality of the education in the country especially at the elementary and secondary levels. The results of the standard tests conducted among elementary and secondary students were way below the target mean score.
Disadvantaged students are most likely to drop out in elementary level. Some who finished primary school could not longer attend high school.
These are the major concerns aside from the lack of competent teachers, school buildings, textbooks and equipment.
Senate Bill 2366 seeks a guarantee of sending all Filipino children and youth to elementary and high school. Known as “No Filipino Child Left Behind Act,” the proposed measure sets the following crucial objectives:
• By 2012, all Filipino children of compulsory age must have completed elementary education;
• By 2016, all Filipinos must have obtained and completed high school education.
The measure is to ensure education would be accessible to all. The bill also provides for the allocation of an additional P10 billion to the existing budget of the Department of Education.
The bill would provide comfort for many disadvantaged Filipino children. Concrete support should be given to all Filipino children and youth to enable them to obtain education.
The government must make more appropriate initiatives for education-related projects. If not, millions of poor Filipinos will continue to head into their sunset years deprived of the basic rights to a free elementary and secondary education.
* Ang sarap pakinggan ng magandang pangarap na lahat ng batang Filipino ay makakapasok sa paaralan. Hanggang diyan na lang yata ang lahat - isang magandang kuwentuhan!
